The Torah already separates the outward mark from the heart: "Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart" (Deut 10:16), and Jeremiah warns that Yahuah will punish "the circumcised with the uncircumcised" alike (Jer 9:25-26). Nehemiah confronts returned exiles whose children lost the Jews' language (Neh 13:23-27). Isaiah foretells that those who afflicted Zion "shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet" (Isa 60:14). The book reads the synagogue of Satan as groups claiming Jewish authority while holding traditions shaped in exile by Babylonian thought, not a people by birth: the charge is against those "which say they are Jews, and are not" (Rev 2:9). Revelation 3:9 turns Isaiah around: they come to "know that I have loved thee."
