Torah warns Israel not to "go a whoring after their gods" (Exod 34:15), and Isaiah laments, "How is the faithful city become an harlot!" (Isa 1:21). Ezekiel 16 and 23 tell the history of a bride Yahuah washed and adorned who traded her beauty to every passer-by, and Hosea pleads, "she is not my wife" (Hos 2:2). Revelation's harlot is a religious institution that was supposed to be the bride and became the harlot, committing zanah, covenant treason; the author names the Roman church as his judgment. She sits on many waters, influence over the whole world, and rides the beast as religion borrowing worldly power, a temporary arrangement that ends in the system consuming itself.
