Jacob's blessing gives Judah the scepter (Gen 49:10) and calls Dan "a serpent by the way" (Gen 49:17). Dan set up the first graven image (Judg 18:30), Jeroboam placed a calf there (1 Kgs 12:29-30), and "Ephraim is joined to idols" (Hos 4:17); Moses warned that the idolater's name would be blotted out (Deut 29:18-21). The list in Rev 7:5-8 is theological, not genealogical: Judah first for the Messiah, Levi included because the whole redeemed people is priestly (Rev 1:6), Joseph standing for idolatrous Ephraim, and Dan left out, covenant corrections, not census records. Read by meaning, the names form a confession of redemption. The patristic legend that Antichrist comes from Dan adds what the text never says.
