122Bear Iniquity
nasa / avon — Hebrew
nasa (H5375) — to lift, carry, bear. Paired with avon (H5771) — iniquity, guilt, the liability of a wrong.
Nasa lifts a charge off the record (Forgive), lifts a face in partiality (Lift the face), lifts an empty report and carries it (False Report), and here bears the charge as liability.
A liability-bearing term — to carry the charge and penalty of an offense.
A charge, once entered, must be borne by someone. Nasa avon is the bearing — the guilty carrying their own liability, or a substitute carrying it for them. The same verb that lifts a charge in forgiveness (nasa) here shoulders it as a burden. The Servant bears the iniquity of many: the liability lifted from the guilty and carried by another. It is substitution in the law’s own vocabulary — the charge borne, not waved away.
Leviticus 5:1 “If he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.” The guilty bearing their own liability.
Isaiah 53:11 “He shall bear their iniquities.” The Servant carrying the charge of others.
Leviticus 16:22 “The goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities.” The liability carried away by a substitute.
Numbers 14:34 “Ye shall bear your iniquities.” The penalty shouldered.
Nasa avon means ‘to bear iniquity’ — to carry the legal liability of a wrong. Sometimes the guilty carry it themselves; sometimes a substitute carries it for them. The Servant ‘bears the iniquities of many’: the charge lifted off the guilty and shouldered by another. It is substitution in legal terms.
Every wrong leaves a liability that someone has to carry. Nasa avon is that carrying. The guilty can bear their own — or a substitute can shoulder it. Isaiah says the Servant ‘bears the iniquities of many’: the same verb that lifts a charge in forgiveness, here carrying it away on His own back.
- The guilty (the offender) whose iniquity is a liability to be borne.
- Yahushua (the Servant) bears the iniquity of many, carrying the charge away.
- Yahuah (the Judge) lays the liability where the covering provides.
