The church pictures forgiveness as a change of feeling — letting go of a grudge. But nasa means to lift, to carry, to bear away: the legal removal of a charge from the account. To forgive iniquity is to pick the liability up off the record and haul it elsewhere. “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven” — lifted — (Psalm 32:1) describes a debt physically removed from the ledger, not an emotion softened.
