Entry No. 138G1378

138Decree

dogma — Greek

A dogma is an enacted decree with legal force — a ruling laid down by authority that binds those under it. Caesar’s census goes out as a dogma (Luke 2:1); the Jerusalem council’s decisions are delivered as dogmata (Acts 16:4). The word names legislation, not opinion. This matters at Colossians 2:14, where the certificate of debt stood against us in its dogmata — its decrees. What is cancelled there is the binding force of the charges recorded against the guilty, the decrees that condemned them — a debt discharged by a higher ruling, not the Lawgiver’s own standard erased.
The Root

dogma (G1378) — a decree, ordinance, edict with binding legal force.

The Courtroom Word

A decree term — an enacted ruling that binds those under it.

Its Role in the Court

Authority legislates by decree, and a dogma is a decree in force. In the courtroom reading of Colossians 2, the certificate ‘of dogmata’ is the record of binding charges against the guilty; its cancellation is the discharge of those charges by a higher ruling. Dogma is the legal weight behind a ruling — which is exactly why cancelling the debt-decree against us is a judicial act, not the abolition of Yahuah’s law.

Proof Texts

Colossians 2:14 “The handwriting of ordinances that was against us.” The binding charges (dogmata) cancelled.

Luke 2:1 “There went out a decree from Caesar Augustus.” An enacted, binding ruling.

Acts 16:4 “They delivered them the decrees for to keep.” Rulings laid down by authority.

Ephesians 2:15 “The law of commandments contained in ordinances.” The dividing decrees between the parties, removed — the enmity, not the Lawgiver’s standard.

In Plain Terms

A dogma is a binding decree — a ruling with legal force, like Caesar’s census order. In Colossians 2, the ‘ordinances’ cancelled are the decrees of debt standing against the guilty. A higher ruling discharged the charges; it did not erase the Lawgiver’s own standard.

Bring It Home

A dogma is a decree that carries the weight of law — when it goes out, people are bound. In Colossians 2 the decrees against us — the recorded charges of debt — are cancelled by a higher court’s ruling. The charges are discharged. The Lawgiver’s own standard is not what was struck.

Courtroom Roles
  • The authority (the Legislator) lays down the binding decree.
  • Those under it (the subjects) bound by the dogma.
  • The decrees against us (the charges) cancelled at the cross by a higher ruling.
