123Land of Separation
eretz / gezerah — Hebrew
eretz (H776) — land, earth, country. Paired with gezerah (H1509) — a cutting off, a decreed separation; from gazar, to cut, to decree.
A banishment term — the decreed place to which what is cut off is removed.
A sentence of separation needs a destination, and eretz gezerah is it: the decreed land where the cut-off is sent. On Yom Kippur the scapegoat carries the iniquities out to this severed place — guilt removed from the camp by decree, not merely forgotten. It pictures the executed sentence of separation: the charge carried away to a land fixed for it, out of the presence of the holy.
Leviticus 16:22 “The goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited.” The decreed land of removal.
Leviticus 16:10 “To let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.” The sending-away of the cut-off.
Psalm 103:12 “So far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” Guilt removed to a severed distance.
Micah 7:19 “Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” The decreed banishment of sin.
Eretz gezerah is the ‘cut-off land’ — the uninhabited place the scapegoat was sent to on Yom Kippur, carrying the people’s sins away. It pictures guilt removed by decree, carried out of the camp to a place set apart for it. It is a sentence of separation, executed.
On the Day of Atonement one goat did not die — it was sent away, carrying the nation’s guilt out to a barren, decreed land, never to return. That is eretz gezerah: the place of cutting-off, where what is condemned is carried and left. Sin is not merely pardoned in the camp; it is removed to a severed place by decree.
- Yahuah (the Judge) decrees the separation and the place of removal.
- The scapegoat (the bearer) carries the iniquities to the cut-off land.
- The iniquities (the condemned) removed from the camp to the decreed place.
