124Outside the Camp

exo tes paremboles / exo tes pules — Greek

Outside the camp’ is the place of the legally condemned — where the sentence was executed and the unclean were put. The blasphemer was taken “without the camp” and stoned (Leviticus 24:14); the sin-offering’s body was burned “without the camp” (Leviticus 4:12); the leper dwelt outside it (Leviticus 13:46). To be put outside the camp was to be removed from the covenant community and its presence — a legal expulsion, the location of judgment executed. This is why Hebrews marks it deliberately: “Yahushua also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate” (Hebrews 13:12). He was executed in the very place the condemned were put — taking the location of the sentence.
The Root

exo tes paremboles (G1854 + G3925) — outside the camp; also exo tes pules (G4439), without the gate — the place of the condemned and unclean.

The Courtroom Word

A place term — the location outside the community where the sentence was executed.

Its Role in the Court

A sentence needs a place of execution, and ‘outside the camp’ is it — where the condemned were stoned, the sin-offering burned, the unclean removed. To be put there was legal expulsion from the covenant community and its presence. Hebrews marks the location on purpose: Yahushua suffered without the gate, executed in the place of the condemned. He took not only the sentence but its location — borne outside, where the guilty were put.

Proof Texts

Leviticus 24:14 “Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp... and let all the congregation stone him.” The place of execution.

Leviticus 4:12 “The whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp... and burn him.” The sin-offering burned outside.

Hebrews 13:12 “Yahushua also... suffered without the gate.” Executed in the place of the condemned.

Hebrews 13:13 “Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.” Joining Him in the place of reproach.

In Plain Terms

‘Outside the camp’ was where the condemned were put — where the guilty were stoned, the sin-offering burned, the unclean sent. It was legal expulsion from the community. And Hebrews notes it on purpose: Yahushua ‘suffered without the gate,’ executed in the very place the condemned were put.

Bring It Home

The camp was the place of the living community; outside it was the place of the condemned — execution, burning, banishment. So when Hebrews says Yahushua ‘suffered without the gate,’ it is placing Him exactly where the guilty were sent. He took not just the sentence but its address: outside, with the condemned.

Courtroom Roles
  • Yahuah (the Judge) whose sentence is executed outside the camp.
  • Yahushua (the condemned’s place taken) suffered without the gate, in the place of the guilty.
  • The camp (the community) from which the condemned are removed.
