oth (H226) — a sign, token, mark; the appointed token of a covenant.
A token term — the appointed mark that proves and identifies a covenant.
A covenant is marked by its sign — the token that certifies it and identifies its parties. The rainbow, circumcision, the Sabbath are each an oth: a legal mark, not an ornament, testifying to the bond and naming whose it is. To bear the sign is to be identified as a party to the covenant. Signs are the covenant’s proof and identification — the tokens that say the agreement stands and this one belongs to it.
Genesis 9:13 “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant.” The sign that certifies the bond.
Genesis 17:11 “It shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.” Circumcision as the covenant sign.
