Entry No. 66H490

66Widow

almanah — Hebrew

The widow is a protected legal class — named, alongside the orphan and the stranger, as one to whom the law owes special guardianship. “Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child” (Exodus 22:22); “he doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow” (Deuteronomy 10:18). The almanah, having lost her legal protector, is placed under the special protection of the law and of Yahuah Himself, who names Himself her defender. To harm the widow is to draw the court’s particular wrath; to defend her is to do the justice the law requires. The widow’s status is a legal category the covenant singles out for guardianship — the vulnerable made a special charge of the court.
The Root

almanah (H490) — a widow; a protected legal class under special guardianship.

The Courtroom Word

A protected-class term — the vulnerable made a special charge of the court.

Its Role in the Court

The law singles out the defenseless for guardianship, and the widow is chief among them — named with the orphan and the stranger as those the court especially protects. Having lost her legal protector, the almanah is placed under Yahuah’s own defense; He executes the judgment of the widow. To afflict her draws the court’s wrath; to defend her is required justice. The widow’s status is a legal category the covenant guards — the vulnerable made the court’s particular charge.

Proof Texts

Exodus 22:22 “Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.” The protected class named.

Deuteronomy 10:18 “He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow.” Yahuah as her defender.

Psalm 68:5 “A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows.” The court’s special guardianship.

James 1:27 “To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction.” The duty toward the protected class.

In Plain Terms

The widow is a protected legal class — named with the orphan and the stranger as those the law owes special guardianship. Having lost her legal protector, she is placed under Yahuah’s own defense: He ‘executes the judgment of the widow.’ To harm her draws the court’s wrath; to defend her is required justice. Her status is a category the covenant singles out for protection.

Bring It Home

The widow, the orphan, and the stranger are named again and again as the law’s special charge — the vulnerable the court particularly guards. Having lost her protector, the widow is placed under Yahuah’s own defense; He calls Himself ‘a judge of the widows.’ To afflict her is to provoke the court; to defend her is the justice the law requires.

Courtroom Roles
  • The widow (the protected class) the vulnerable placed under special guardianship.
  • Yahuah (the defender) who executes the judgment of the widow.
  • The community (the bound) required to protect, forbidden to afflict her.
