eleutheros (G1658) — free, freeborn or freed; not under bondage.
A status term — the standing of one legally released from bondage.
Freedom is a legal position, not a mood — the released bondman holds a new standing on the record. It can be defended, and it can be forfeited, which is why Scripture commands standing fast in it. To be made free is to have an authority competent to release you certify your release: the bondage lawfully ended, the new status entered. Liberty is enacted and recorded, not merely felt.
Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Messiah hath made us free.” A status to be held, defensible.
John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” Release by a competent authority.
Romans 6:18 “Being then made free from sin.” The change of legal position.
1 Corinthians 7:22 “Is Messiah’s freeman.” The freed standing named.
Free is a legal status — released from bondage and certified as such — not just a feeling of ease. It can be defended and it can be lost, which is why Scripture says to stand fast in it. To be made free is to have your release granted by one with the authority to grant it.
A freed slave did not just feel different — he held papers, a new legal standing that a court would recognize and defend. That is freedom in Scripture: bondage lawfully ended, release certified. And because a status can be argued away, we are told to stand fast in it.

- The bondage (the prior status) lawfully ended and recorded.
