48Keep

shamar — Hebrew

To keep is to guard as a charge — to watch over and preserve something entrusted, the way a sentinel keeps a post. Shamar first appears with Adam set “to dress it and to keep it” (Genesis 2:15) — a custodial duty, not a suggestion. To keep the commandments is to stand guard over them, protecting them from breach as one guards a trust. This is far more than obeying when convenient; it is the active, vigilant custody of a charge one is answerable for. ‘Keep my commandments’ places the believer as watchman over the terms of the covenant, responsible to see they are not violated.
The Root

shamar (H8104) — to keep, guard, watch, preserve; to attend to a charge.

The Courtroom Word

A custody term — the vigilant guarding of an entrusted charge.

Its Role in the Court

A charge entrusted must be guarded, and shamar is that guarding. To keep the commandments is to hold them as a trust, watching against their breach — an active custody, not passive compliance. Adam was to keep the garden; the priest keeps the charge of the sanctuary; the believer keeps the covenant terms. Keeping is the watchman’s duty over what he is answerable for.

Proof Texts

Genesis 2:15 “To dress it and to keep it.” The custodial charge given to man.

Deuteronomy 6:17 “Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of Yahuah.” The terms guarded as a trust.

Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin.” The charge kept close, against breach.

John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Keeping as the proof of loyalty.

In Plain Terms

To keep is to guard something entrusted to you — to watch over it like a sentinel, not just obey when convenient. To keep the commandments is to stand guard over them, protecting them from breach. It is active custody of a charge you answer for.

Bring It Home

A watchman does not ‘keep’ his post by agreeing with it — he guards it, alert against anything that would breach it. That is shamar. To keep the commandments is to be that watchman over the covenant terms: responsible, vigilant, answerable that they are not violated.

Courtroom Roles
  • The believer (the watchman) guards the charge entrusted to him.
  • Yahuah (the One who entrusts) gives the terms to be kept.
  • The commandments (the charge) the trust to be guarded against breach.
