nuach / menuchah — Hebrew

Rest, in Torah, is secured possession of the inheritance — the settled enjoyment of what was promised, not mere cessation of labor. “Yahuah your Elohim... hath given you rest, and hath given you this land” (Joshua 1:13) joins rest to the secured estate: rest is the settled state of a people safe in their possession. Menuchah is a resting-place, a settled inheritance. This is why Hebrews can speak of a rest that “remaineth” (Hebrews 4:9) — an inheritance yet to be entered. The sabbath rest points to it: not idleness, but the secured enjoyment of the promise, the estate possessed and at peace.
