tsedeq — Hebrew

Righteousness is conformity to the standard — rightness measured against the law, the quality of what aligns with the just norm. Tsedeq is not a warm inner glow but a legal rectitude: right weights and measures are ‘just’ (tsedeq), a right verdict is righteous, a righteous man is one who conforms to the covenant standard. “The righteous Yahuah loveth righteousness” (Psalm 11:7). Because righteousness is measured against a standard, it presupposes the standard: there is no rightness where there is no norm to be right by. To be righteous is to align with the law’s requirement; the word itself is anchored to the code it conforms to.
