Truth is not merely accuracy but reliability — firmness, faithfulness, that which is established and can be leaned on. Emet, from the root aman (to be firm, to confirm), is the quality of what stands: a true witness is a reliable one, a true word is one that holds. This is why truth and faithfulness are one word-family in Hebrew: “abundant in goodness and truth” (Exodus 34:6) means abounding in reliable faithfulness. In the courtroom, truth is the reliability of testimony that will not fail under examination.
