120Surety
arab / egguos — Hebrew / Greek
arab (H6148) — to pledge, to give surety, to become responsible for. Paired with egguos (G1450) — a guarantor, surety.
A guarantee term — the one who pledges himself as security for another’s obligation.
An obligation may be secured by a surety — one who stands good for it, liable if the party defaults. It is not encouragement but assumed liability: the surety pledges his own person against the outcome. Judah stood surety for Benjamin; Yahushua is ‘surety of a better testament,’ the guarantee that the covenant will hold. To be a surety is to pledge oneself as security — the guarantee that the obligation is met, liable in the debtor’s place.
Genesis 43:9 “I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him.” The pledge assuming liability.
Hebrews 7:22 “Was Yahushua made a surety of a better testament.” The guarantee of the covenant.
Proverbs 11:15 “He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it.” The real liability a surety takes on.
Proverbs 22:26 “Be not thou one of them... that are sureties for debts.” The weight of standing good for another.
A surety is the one who guarantees another’s obligation — who legally stands good for a debt, liable if the other fails. Judah became surety for Benjamin: ‘of my hand shalt thou require him.’ Yahushua is ‘surety of a better testament’: the guarantee the covenant will hold. To be a surety is to pledge yourself as security for another.
A surety is not a cheerleader — he is the one who signs to guarantee your debt, and pays if you can’t. Judah pledged himself for Benjamin’s safe return: ‘of my hand shalt thou require him.’ Yahushua is called the ‘surety’ of the covenant: the guarantee, in His own person, that it will stand.
- Yahushua (the Surety) pledges Himself as the guarantee of the covenant.
- The debtor (the one guaranteed) whose obligation the surety stands good for.
- Yahuah (the party secured) to whom the guarantee is given.
