Chesed is the covenant obligation of steadfast kindness owed between bound parties — loyalty a covenant partner is duty-bound to show, not random benevolence. Chesed is the faithfulness that keeps covenant even when it costs, the kindness that flows from obligation rather than mood. “That I may shew him kindness for Jonathan’s sake” (2 Samuel 9:1) is David honoring a covenant already sworn. When Scripture says Yahuah’s chesed endures forever, it declares His covenant loyalty unbreakable. It is a legal-relational term: the reliable, obligated faithfulness a bond requires of the parties within it.
