Favor is a favorable disposition or ruling extended toward one who holds no claim to it. To ‘find favor in the eyes’ of a king or a judge is to receive what could not be demanded — an outcome granted from above, not owed from below (Esther 5:2; Genesis 6:8). Favor is unearned standing bestowed by one with the authority to bestow it. This is the clean Hebrew sense underneath the softer modern word: not a warm feeling, but a ruling in one’s favor that the recipient could not have compelled. Favor is the court inclining toward a party out of the judge’s own good will, apart from merit.

Its Role in the Court

Some outcomes cannot be demanded, only granted — and favor is the granting. To find favor is to receive a favorable ruling one had no standing to require, extended by an authority free to extend it. Noah found favor; Esther obtained favor; the recipient contributes nothing but the finding. Favor is the court’s own goodwill, inclining toward a party who could not compel it.

Esther could not demand the king’s welcome — she could only find favor, and he extended the scepter. That is favor: a favorable ruling granted by one free to grant it, to someone with no claim to require it. Noah found it in Yahuah’s eyes the same way.
